The Big Deal - Transforming People, Places and Perceptions

The Big Deal is a year of united community action and education bringing together churches, council, police and communities with the common goal to transform the city:

  • Reducing crime and fear of crime.
  • Building community spirit.
  • Sharing the Christian message of hope and faith

Conceived by The Message, the Big Deal started in Salford in 2005 with a vision to go around the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester over the next five to seven years. This year it moves to Stockport and promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Big Deal will help to build relationships and make a difference in our local communities by transforming people, places and perceptions.

It's made up of three parts: Big Deal in Schools; Communities and Churches:

    SCHOOLS
The aim is for a one-week programme to every Stockport high school on the theme of 'Respect'. It will link into the Agreed Syllabus for RE and will involve interactive lessons, assemblies and an end of week concert. In particular the Big Deal will demonstrate the way in which local believers are inspired to participate positively in their communities.

"I'm really excited by all the Big Deal has to offer and encourage every church and school to make the most of this fantastic opportunity."
Sue Mayo, Stockport Christians in Schools

    COMMUNITIES
This is all about building strong partnerships between churches, police, council and community groups by working together to identify and deliver fifty community action projects including environmental action, crime reduction and lots of fun! The scope is only limited by imagination.

"I'm really delighted the Big Deal is coming to Stockport, I've heard about the great work in Salford and want to see the same things happening in Stockport. This is an opportunity for all people in congregations and communities to get involved in a very practical way in some real projects that can change people's lives."
Chief Superintendent Neil Wain, Stockport Divisional Commander

    CHURCHES
The challenge is to mobilise the single biggest voluntary resource in Stockport to work together in a new way. Better understanding local needs and helping provide solutions. This is the opportunity for Stockport churches to unite in prayer and action, serving their local communities and sharing God's love.

"Churches working together achieve for those around them so much and can have a powerful influence in the community. When they combine those efforts with other partners in the community a real transformation can come about. The Message Trust has a well recognised and impressive record of drawing people together to make a real difference. I hope as many people as possible will get behind them in Stockport."
Right Reverend Nigel Stock, Bishop of Stockport
